Emperador’s way to global success
Emperador Inc. capitalises on its worldwide distribution network to market its complete range of brandy, whisky and single malt whiskies. For the last two decades, the company has been expanding globally through acquisitions and new brands. Emperador owns the fifth largest Scotch whisky manufacturer in the world, Whyte and Mackay Group, and Bodegas Fundador in Spain, the oldest brandy maker in Spain. The acquisition of Whyte and Mackay in 2014, known for ultra-luxury whisky brand Dalmore and premium brand Jura, allowed Emperador to expand from brandy to the whisky business.
Despite economic turmoil and supply chain disruptions during the year, Emperador Inc. saw a significant rise in revenue as well as profit in 2022. Emperador Inc. President Winston Co, in a disclosure to the Philippines Stock Exchange, reported that the company earned consolidated revenues of PHP28 bn (USD 0.475 bn) for the first half of 2022, thanks to a 9.5% increase in brandy sales and a 13% improvement in sales of its whisky brands. The increased sale volume led to a net income of PHP5.3 bn (USD 89.88 mn) during the first half of this year. The brandy segment of Emperador Inc. increased its first-half revenues by 10% year-on-year to PHP17.9 bn (USD 0.303 bn) as a result of its strong second-quarter performance, which is attributed to improved global sales. According to Co, the company’s growth is strong in Asia, Europe, and North America and he expects a stronger performance in the second half of 2022.
In July 2022, Emperador debut on the Singapore Stock Exchange (SGX). It is the first Philippine Stock Exchange-listed company to have a secondary listing on the Singapore Exchange. On September 19, Emperador joined the Straits Times Index (STI) which tracks the performance of the top 30 companies listed on the SGX.
“It is an honour to be the first and only Philippine company to be part of the STI alongside its reputable roster of global companies. Being a constituent in the benchmark index of Asia’s most international exchange further solidifies Emperador’s status as a global company. Inclusion in the STI is a testament of Emperador’s consistent outstanding performance through the years,” Co said.
Emperado Inc.’s future
Emperador Inc. sees unceasing growth of population globally and high demand for alcoholic beverages as two key aspects of its growth. For future growth, the company is looking to contemporize, premiumize, and internationalize its business. On the one hand it plans to introduce new brands and reposition key brands and improve brand visibility amongst millennials and Gen Z. On the other hand, Emperador wants to focus on single malts, which contribute to 76% of the branded scotch whisky business.
Furthermore, with a global expansion, Emperador expects to generate 50% of its sales outside the Philippines by 2025.
