Driven by growth and stability: Australia’s investment potential

Australia presents a compelling case as an investment destination, according to QIC’s Chief Economist, Matthew Peter, who emphasises the nation’s unique advantages. Australia ranks as the sixth-most competitive investment environment among the world’s 50 largest economies, thanks to strengths in demographics, economic activity, and governance. Peter states that “Australia owes its overall performance to top 10 rankings in demographics, economic activity, and governance,” highlighting factors that set the nation apart in the global landscape in a recently published insight.

One of Australia’s major draws, the Australian institutional manager notes, is its exceptional population growth rate. The country experiences the “strongest population growth rate in the world at 2.4%,” a trend expected to boost demand for infrastructure, housing, and services over the long term, ultimately supporting robust economic expansion. Coupled with a trend GDP growth rate estimated at 2.3%, Australia’s economy is relatively resilient, with a growth trajectory that QIC believes positions it advantageously among advanced economies.

In addition to demographics, Australia’s business environment is another major factor making it attractive to investors. The nation ranks seventh globally for ease of doing business, an indicator that reflects strong governance and efficient regulatory frameworks. This stability and ease of operations further cement Australia’s appeal for businesses looking to expand or invest in the Asia-Pacific region.

Though QIC acknowledges some limitations, particularly regarding debt imbalances, which it ranks lower than other strengths, the firm maintains that Australia’s overall profile remains competitive. The resilience demonstrated by the Australian economy in the face of global challenges, alongside stable governance and strategic positioning in the Asia-Pacific, contributes to its continued attractiveness.

QIC concludes that these factors collectively underscore Australia’s potential for long-term investment. As Peter notes, the country’s demographic trends and business-friendly policies create a stable and growing environment, which QIC believes is primed to deliver strong returns for investors.
